New .TN Registration Requirement

13th May 2010

At the end of the Sunrise and Landrush Period, the .TN Registry reintroduced a requirement that had been previously been abolished.

Those who wish to register a domain name in Tunisia, but who do not have an office in this country, will be required to provide evidence of their registration mark in Tunisia and will only be eligible to apply for a domain name similar or corresponding to that trademark.

New Non Latin Domains

13th May 2010

ICANN has published information regarding the addition of IDN (Internationalized Domain Name) ccTLDs to the root zone meaning non Latin characters will be available for Egypt, Saudi Arabia and United Arab Emirates in Arabic as well as the Russian extension in Cirillic. It is also unknown at this time, how Registries will launch the registration process. ICANN’s official announcement stated:-

“For the first time in the history of the Internet, non-Latin characters are being used for top-level domains. The first IDN country-code top-level domains were inserted in the DNS root zone earlier today. The associated countries and their respective IDN ccTLDs are, Egypt, Saudi Arabia and United Arab Emirates.

Issues With .VE Registry

Namesco has been informed that there may be possible intermittent issues with the .VE Registry and resolution of domain names may be affected as well. It’s reported that there have been recent problems accessing even the Registry’s website and accessing some websites in Venezuela has become erratic lately.

.DO Availability

7th April 2010

NIC.DO, the Dominican Republic registry, has announced the extension of the grandfathering period until 10 June 2010 to allow for more applications for 2nd-level .DO domains. Registrants of existing 3rd-level Domains (.com.do, .net.do, .org.do etc.), during this period will be given priority to register their matching 2nd-level domain.

Argentinian Website Warning

The Argentinian Registry (NIC.AR) has recently issued an important notice on their website. They are warning registrants that they must ensure their contact and other data* associated with their Domain names are accurate and up to date, or risk losing those Domains. It’s particularly important for the Registrant email address to be valid.

NIC.AR are stating that discovery of incorrect registrant data (name, address, telephone no. ), use of false names, corporate names missing, etc., could result in the deletion of the Registrant, which would automatically delete ALL Domains for that registrant.

NEW .UK Name Opportunities

Nominet, the national registry for .UK Domain names has announced their intention to allow registration of one character, two letter and other reserved .UK Domain names which are currently not permitted. This is an exciting opportunity potentially opening up valuable new Domains.

Nominet has begun a consultation period on the proposed release lasting until 8 June 2010 and they would like to gather feedback from any stakeholders (including Registrants – so now is your time to speak up!).
