The new go-live date is Wednesday, November 7, at which time new registration requests will be taken on a first-come, first-serve basis

The Internet Corporation for Assigned Names and Numbers (ICANN) has responded to the growing shortage of realistically useable domain names and are creating 7 new gTLDs, .biz, .info, .pro, .aero, .coop, .museum and .name.

The .uk.co domain has been setup as a way of creating more space within the already overcrowded ".co.uk" name space. It serves to help reduce the confusion which many people have with ".co.uk".

Nominet, the registration body for the country code .uk have seen their first month on month rise in registration volumes since March 2000 when 245967 .uk domain names were registered. Since then, the monthly registration volumes have been decreasing. With the domin name registrations drying up, it has caused a number of smaller domain name registrtion companies to go out of business. Many customers have lost critical web based services such as e-mail accounts and web sites.
